Project Summary
To foster an innovative, collaborative environment for their musical students, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign looked to Bailey Edward for help on how to rebrand and modernize the existing Music Hall. Faced with the challenge of remodeling while the building remained open and occupied, Bailey Edward worked to create a space that encouraged collaboration and evoked feelings of calm and creativity, all while updating the building’s safety.
The 1970’s era building needed to be brought up to code, the wayfinding required marking and signage, and fire alarm systems had to be installed. However, Bailey Edward worked to make the necessary safety upgrades as unobtrusive as possible to create a comfortable and inviting space.
Bailey Edward capitalized on the opportunity to incorporate more natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows. Bailey Edward also upgraded the acoustics of the building by adding doors to practice corridors to support an environment conducive to creating music. Cozy seating alcoves allowed the building to become an attraction for musical students and faculty alike as a place to spend time, learn, and collaborate.

Design Vignette
One of the major issues with the existing interior of the Music Building was its lack of wayfinding. A reception desk was created on the main floor that can be seen from both North and South lobbies. The desk is equipped with maps and student help services that can guide visitors to their desired location. Furthermore, overall wayfinding was improved by opening corridors to exits and creating contemporary signage and visual display boards.
