Project Summary
In order to better prepare their nursing students for real-life surgical situations, the College of DuPage (COD) needed to expand its existing simulation nursing spaces to meeting growing enrollment. To meet these goals, COD doubled its existing surgical simulation laboratory within its Health and Sciences Center.
Storage and kitchenette areas adjacent to the existing simulation laboratory were transformed by adding simulation tables, simulated surgical lighting, and mobile equipment. Along with the addition of new simulation equipment set-ups, a new storage system was installed to provide immediate access to frequently used supplies and equipment. Within the existing space, dividing walls were removed to make the area more flexible, allowing instructors to more easily supervise and instruct students during class.
The end results are updated teaching and classroom spaces that allow for more students to gain hands-on learning experiences, making them more valuable to their future healthcare employers.

Simulation spaces allow for a variety of training methodologies such as high fidelity mannequins, virtual reality simulations, and simple role-playing scenarios. Developing simulated learning environments are highly effective method to train nurses for both skill and non-skill based techniques. Students are better prepared to respond to clinical scenarios through strengthened critical thinking skills, responsiveness, and increased preparedness for real workplace environments.
