Project Summary

The University of Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Gymnastics program is located in the Kenney Gymnasium, a National Historic Registered Building, built in 1904. The Division I team needed a locker room remodel alongside their installation of a recessed vault landing pit. UIUC was looking to provide quality facilities that supported the team’s needs and created an atmosphere of school spirit and team pride.

Bailey Edward worked to create a balance between providing a modern interior and remaining respectful to the historic nature of building. A dedicated gymnastics-branded entry gives way to a foyer, team areas, and a formal conference room. The public spaces will be used for alumni visits, and recruiting which feature incorporated super graphics of the alumni, team awards, and university logos and colors. Access to the second floor involved a contemporary staircase and a limited use/limited access elevator.

Design Vignette

Gymnastics super graphics, school colors, and school logos line the hallways of the entry that run through the foyer, team areas, and conference room. The branded walkway promotes team spirit and school pride for all who walk through. The design is impressive to visitors, prospective candidates, and invokes Illini pride among the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams.
