Project Summary
The Illini Union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) identified two locations on its campus to put in Starbucks Coffee Stores that would draw together all members of the UIUC community, including students, staff, and visitors. The two locations were within the Illini Union Bookstore (IUB) building and the Illini Union which were not outfitted for restaurant use, requiring Bailey Edward to convert the existing spaces into restaurant compatible areas.
Bailey Edward reviewed existing architectural plans and performed site evaluations to provide the best solutions to accommodate the changes in mechanical and electrical systems needed for a restaurant installation. The Starbucks locations will include full-service kiosks, back-of-house operations, and seating areas. Bailey Edward worked closely with representatives from Starbucks Corporate, the Illini Union, and UIUC’s team to ensure the project would be completed on schedule for the students and meet University and Starbucks standards.
The addition of these Starbucks Coffee Stores encourages the UIUC community to linger and fosters communication. Furthermore, the efficiently planned stores not only serve as informal work and study locations, but also provide employment opportunities to UIUC students and generate income for the Illini Union.

Design Vignette
The Starbucks located in the Illini Union Bookstore includes a full service walk-up counter inside the IUB vestibule which allows for the Starbucks to remain open, even when the IUB is closed. This location also features indoor and outdoor seating options, full-height and low-height partitions, and new glass doors with a frosted Starbucks logo.
