Project Summary
The Department of Bio-Engineering at this university desired a series of research laboratories in an effort to attract more faculty members. Bailey Edward developed a master plan for the research laboratories that recommended a multi-phase approach based on available funding.
Phase I involved four bio-level wet laboratories with solvent fume safety hoods, vented bio-safety cabinets, an acid fume hood, vacuum pumps, DI-system and an autoclave/dishwashing room located on the main floor of the Digital Computer Laboratory Building. Minor demolition was needed to convert one room into four laboratory rooms.

Design Vignette
Challenges of the project included coordination of exhaust hood ductwork, coordination with UIUC to minimize the impact of the work on the staff, and ensuring the user provided items would work with Bailey Edward’s design. Routing the exhaust duct vertically through the office space above proved complex. Bailey Edward acquired a better understanding of the structural requirements, as well as the overall space, in order to overcome this challenge.
