Observations | Alternative Altgelds
From Bailey Edward’s offices to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chancellor’s, the excitement of updating and preserving Altgeld Hall has elicited some creative renditions of the historic building. Check out some of our favorites below!
Champaign Branch Manager Kevin Schnebly has been assisting the Bailey Edward preservation team by flying a drone around the tall towers of Altgeld to observe its exterior conditions. You may remember from Kevin’s anniversary celebration, he received a 3-D printer. And what better way to test out a new toy than to print a 3-D model of one of the University of Illinois’ most iconic buildings?
Bailey Edward designer and Illini alumna Meghna Majethiyas been busy the last few months assisting with the documentation of Altgeld’s current conditions using 3D laser scanners, studies of the existing spaces, as well as creating the drawings for the conceptual design and conducting a preliminary LEED checklist. When taking a break from the technical aspects of the project, Meghna took a moment to appreciate Altgeld’s beauty with a pen and ink drawing.
And finally, to get in the holiday spirit, the University of Illinois’s Chancellor’s office built the most delectable Altgeld yet. Working to the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies, Illini Housing’s head pastry chef created this gorgeous gingerbread Altgeld, including sugar pane windows, chocolate trees, and powdered sugar snow. But watch it quick before Chancellor Jones takes another bite!
