People | BE's Interiors Team Goes to NeoCon

Neo Con

Summer in Chicago brings warmer weather, outdoor activities, and (for the design world) NeoCon. In its 51st year, NeoCon is an extensive exposition of commercial design held at the Merchandise Mart on the Chicago River. NeoCon represents 500 leading companies and offers over 100 seminars for professionals.

Bailey Edward’s interiors team, Ania Beau, NCIDQ and Gabriella Massey, spent the week attending courses and browsing showrooms covering trends and new styles of commercial design. Ania, Gabriella, and the 50,000 design professionals who attend annually, met with a variety of vendors for furniture, fabrics, flooring systems, and other products for commercial, higher education, and healthcare designs. Spotting color and furniture trends throughout the showrooms, they noticed a shift towards products balancing residential feeling with a commercial use.

Each day, NeoCon offers continuing education unit (CEU) courses for design professionals and hosts keynote speakers for the conference. Ania and Gabriella were able to attend a few courses on healthcare design, noting trends that they can translate directly to BE’s healthcare clients.
“It’s fun to experience different trends that manufacturers and other designers are exploring,” said Ania, “You really have your eyes opened to the number of vendors that are available. We were able to meet so many representatives for different products, and it’s easy to just rely on the same few vendors we always use, but this serves as a great reminder that there’s a much larger breadth of product.”

NeoCon offered a design timeline from its inception in 1969, outlining the changes in interior trends as the conference has progressed. What’s next in interior design? According to NeoCon, “human well-being is emerging as a new benchmark for good design, as is inclusivity for people of all abilities, genders, and ages,” and a daily design philosophy of Bailey Edward.
