Cleared for Take-Off: Bailey Edward Begins Kankakee Armory Project

Story:

Bailey Edward, an award-winning architecture, historic preservation and interior design firm, has been awarded the $48 million Illinois Army National Guard Readiness Center and Aviation Support Facility project to be constructed at the Greater Kankakee Airport.

The current facility, located at Midway Airport, is suffering from a diminishing safety zone between the apron and taxiway as runways have been extended and the size of commercial airliners increases. The 168,000 square foot Illinois Army National Guard Readiness Center and Aviation Support Facility will incorporate a 64,000 square foot readiness center and a 104,000 square foot aviation support facility designed to serve the peacetime mission of the assigned Army National Guard units. The facility will provide for the administration, training and maintenance activities necessary to improve the units’ readiness posture. Elements of specific importance include hangar space for ten UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, a weapons simulator training space and task-loaded combat simulated flight environments. The facility will be designed to incorporate LEED sustainability measures.

Bailey Edward’s experience with Readiness Center’s for the Illinois National Guard includes new construction of the 50,000 sf Readiness Center in Galesburg, Illinois. The Galesburg facility provides resources for two National Guard units and is viewed by the Illinois Department of Military Affairs as a model for new facility development. Also within Bailey Edward’s portfolio is the renovation, restoration and retro-commissioning work performed at the 75,000 sf Readiness Center in Urbana, Illinois. The Urbana facility, constructed in 1939, features historically-significant Art Deco styling. Bailey Edward’s efforts assist the Illinois National Guard with their goals to preserve the historic fabric of the structure while accommodating renovations to provide modern amenities and optimum energy performance.

Other firms instrumental in accomplishing the successful design and construction of the new Kankakee facility include KJWW Engineering Consultants providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology engineering; Hanson Professional Services providing structural and geotechnical engineering, as well as military planning; Crawford, Murphy and Tilly providing civil engineering and airport planning; Coover-Clark & Associates providing army aviation support facility design consulting services; dbHMS providing life-cycle costing and design review of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; Rubinos & Mesia Engineers providing design review of structural and civil engineering systems; and JH2B Architects providing on-site construction administration and observation services.

Bailey Edward, a woman-owned small business, serves Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and the entire Midwest Region. Founded in 1991, their clients include the U.S. Department of Agriculture, General Services Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs, in addition to the National Guard.
