Projects | Two BE Projects Win Design Awards
As 2018 winds down, Bailey Edward was honored to attend the AIA Prairie Chapter’s Annual Awards Night, hosted at Illinois State University. As the recipient of two awards that night, Kevin Schnebly and Karla Smalley played an active part on the two projects receiving recognition, The Chemistry Annex and the Illinois National Guard Readiness Center and Army Aviation Support Facility.
In the Preservation / Restoration / Adaptive Re-use category, our work at the Chemistry Annex on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s campus received an Honorable Mention. Bailey Edward served as the Historic Preservation Architect for restoration of the Chemistry Annex, a notable building on campus, built in 1937 and eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. To preserve the historic fabric of the building, BE assessed and guided the restoration of the exterior of the building by directing color matching of the original cast-in-place concrete, repointing and restoring the brick masonry, and restoring the historic light fixtures. Furthermore, the historic terrazzo staircase was restored and recoated to return it to its original appearance and protect it from future damage.
In the Building of the Year category, the Kankakee AASF received a Citation of Merit. The Kankakee AASF is a center of civic heritage designed to celebrate those who will be using it: the soldier. The facility is designed to attract, retain, and care for over 200 service men and women, providing a bold, fresh, face for the National Guard, and breathing new life into the recruitment process. The unique façade mirrors a soldier’s camouflage while maximizing solar heat gain through carefully place colored poly-carbonate panels.
We take every effort to make sure each of our projects is designed to please the client and users. It is especially rewarding to have our efforts recognized by our peers and offers positive reinforcement for our dedicated staff and consultants. We are grateful to our entire team for their hard work on these projects and the AIA Prairie Design Jury for recognizing us for this honor.
